What does 佛系 mean?

佛系 was the viral lifestyle word of 2017-2018, predating and setting the stage for 躺平. The term originated from a post describing a “Buddhist-style post-90s generation” — young people who approached life with a calm detachment that looked suspiciously like giving up, but felt like inner peace.

The 佛系 prefix can attach to anything: 佛系恋爱 (Buddhist dating — not chasing, not stressing), 佛系工作 (Buddhist work — not competing for promotions), 佛系购物 (Buddhist shopping — not obsessing over brands), 佛系养生 (Buddhist wellness — occasional healthy choices without obsessing). Each describes a specific form of not trying too hard in a domain that society expects you to care about.

Unlike 躺平, which is explicitly a rejection of the economic system, 佛系 is more of a personal temperament — it is about how you feel internally, not what you protest externally. But the two are obviously related: when the system makes competition unbearable, detachment becomes adaptive.

The line between genuine peace and learned helplessness is intentionally blurred. 佛系 is a self-presentation that protects against judgment: you cannot fail at something you were never really trying to achieve. This ambiguity — is it wisdom or resignation? — is exactly what made the term so resonant.
