What does 上头 mean?
The universal word for healthy and unhealthy obsessions — from new crushes to new shows to actual intoxication.
上头
Obsessed / addicted / head over heels — when something takes over your brain and you can't stop.
Go up to the head.
Obsessed / addicted / head over heels — when something takes over your brain and you can't stop.
WHEN YOU SEE IT
上头 literally describes something rising to your head — like alcohol, or a dizzy spell, or an intoxicating thought. The metaphor works for everything: a TV show you can’t stop watching is 上头, a new crush you can’t stop thinking about is 上头, a song stuck in your head is 上头, a game you play until 4am is 上头.
The word captures the specific feeling of being not quite in control — something external has taken up residence in your brain and is now running the show. It is not necessarily bad (binge-watching a great series is joyful 上头) but it implies a loss of moderation that you are fully aware of and not fighting.
Its opposite is 下头 (xià tóu — “down from the head”), which means to be turned off, to have your enthusiasm killed, or to snap out of an obsession. If 上头 is the rush, 下头 is the comedown. A beautiful person who opens their mouth and says something terrible: 瞬间下头 (instant turn-off).
The pair 上头 / 下头 is one of Chinese internet culture’s most useful emotional descriptors — they name the specific experience of being seized by enthusiasm and then suddenly released from it.
