How do I say 'I know, right?'

A very natural conversational backing signal — shows you are tracking and agreeing, not just nodding.

就是说

jiù shì shuō

I know, right? / That's what I'm saying / exactly.

LITERAL

That is to say.

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS

I know, right? / That's what I'm saying / exactly.

Backing up someone's point in conversationShowing strong agreementCasual conversation among friends

就是说 is the conversational glue that shows you are not just hearing someone — you are tracking, agreeing, and backing them up. It is functionally equivalent to “I know, right?” or “That’s exactly what I’m saying,” but it comes from a different grammatical place.

The literal meaning is “that is to say” — and it still works that way when used mid-sentence to rephrase something. But as a standalone conversational response, 就是说!or 就是说啊!means “exactly! you put it perfectly!” It validates the other person’s statement as correct and resonant.

The conversational signal vocabulary:

  • 就是说! — “That’s what I’m saying! / Exactly!”
  • 对吧? — “Right?” — a gentle tag question inviting agreement.
  • 是不是? — “Isn’t it?” — slightly more insistent, pushes for confirmation.
  • 没错! — “Not wrong! / That’s right!” — strong, direct agreement.

These small conversational signals are what separate someone who speaks Chinese from someone who converses in Chinese. They are the difference between being understood and being a good person to talk to.

HOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY SAY IT

这房价也太离谱了。就是说啊!

Zhè fángjià yě tài lípǔ le. Jiù shì shuō a!

These housing prices are insane. I know, right?!

就是说,我也觉得这个方案不太行。

Jiù shì shuō, wǒ yě juéde zhège fāng'àn bú tài xíng.

That's what I'm saying — I also think this plan won't work.
