How do I say 'I'm scared'?

A direct, natural description of fear; 有点 makes it less intense and more conversational.

我有点害怕

wǒ yǒudiǎn hàipà

I'm a bit scared.

LITERAL

I am a little afraid.

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS

I'm a bit scared.

WHEN IT FITS

Fear of an event or objectAdmitting concernPhysical or emotional fear

This is one of the most useful subject-object corrections for English speakers.

In Chinese, 可怕 usually describes the thing that causes fear, not the person feeling it. That is why 我很可怕 sounds like “I am frightening.” To talk about your own fear, use 怕 or 害怕.

害怕 is slightly fuller and more explicit. 怕 is shorter and very common in speech. Adding 有点 softens the statement and makes it sound more natural in everyday conversation.

HOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY SAY IT

Yí ge rén zǒu yèlù, wǒ yǒudiǎn hàipà.

Physical safety concern
说实话,我挺怕失败的。

Shuō shíhuà, wǒ tǐng pà shībài de.

Honestly, I'm pretty afraid of failing.
