精神内耗 became a national conversation topic in 2021 when a video essay by a creator called 衣戈猜想 (Yi Ge Cai Xiang) titled “回村三天,二舅治好了我的精神内耗” (“Three Days Back in the Village, My Uncle Cured My Mental Friction”) went massively viral. The video told the story of the creator’s disabled uncle who, despite enormous hardship, lived a life of practical action rather than internal torment.
The term 精神内耗 describes a specific psychological state: your mental energy is being consumed not by external challenges but by internal conflict — overthinking, self-doubt, rumination, imaginary arguments, and what-if spirals. You are exhausted, but not because you did anything; your mind has been fighting itself all day.
The term resonated because it gave a name to something millions of young Chinese were experiencing: the specific exhaustion of a generation caught between traditional expectations, modern pressures, and an uncertain future. It is not clinical depression or anxiety disorder — it is the everyday mental friction of trying to navigate a high-pressure society while maintaining a sense of self.
In everyday usage, people now say 别内耗了 (stop the internal friction) as advice to friends who are overthinking. The word has become shorthand for “you are torturing yourself with thoughts, and it’s not helping.”
