Certifications expire. Testing standards update. A certificate that was valid when the supplier first exported to your country three years ago may be worthless today. Chinese suppliers do not always track expiration dates proactively — they may genuinely not realize a certificate has lapsed until a buyer asks. Asking about validity is not an accusation; it is a practical check that protects both parties. And if the supplier does not have the certificate you need, the next phrase is 能不能去做一个 (néng bù néng qù zuò yī gè — can you go get one?). Certification is a service that Chinese factories can purchase from testing labs, and many are willing to obtain new certifications for a serious buyer — though the cost and timeline become part of the negotiation.
