We need a certificate
Clean and direct. Chinese suppliers understand this immediately. The key is specifying which certificate — the word alone is a conversation starter, not a complete request.

WHEN IT FITS
Certificates are the gatekeepers of international trade. Without the right ones, your shipment sits in customs, accruing storage fees while you frantically message your supplier for documentation that should have been sorted out before production even began. The phrase 我们需要证书 (wǒmen xūyào zhèngshū) is how you start that process — ideally early enough that it is not a crisis.
Chinese suppliers have a practical, sometimes transactional relationship with certifications. A large, export-experienced factory will have a folder of certificates ready to share — CE, RoHS, FDA, FCC, ISO, whatever their target markets require. They understand that certificates are not optional paperwork; they are a prerequisite for market access. A smaller workshop making products primarily for the domestic Chinese market may never have been asked for a certificate before and may not fully understand what you need or why. The difference in their response to 我们需要证书 tells you a lot about their export experience. An immediate “哪方面的证书? (nǎ fāngmiàn de zhèngshū? — what kind of certificate?)” signals familiarity. A confused pause or “什么证书? (shénme zhèngshū? — what certificate?)” signals that you may need to explain the requirement in detail, possibly including what the certificate looks like and which testing lab can issue it.
The certification conversation in Chinese has a specific vocabulary that is worth learning in full. 证书 (zhèngshū) is the document. 认证 (rènzhèng) is the certification standard or process. 检测 (jiǎncè) is the testing. 第三方检测 (dìsānfāng jiǎncè) is third-party testing — often a requirement for your market but an additional cost and time commitment that the supplier may not have factored into their quote. 实验室报告 (shíyànshì bàogào) is the lab report. Being able to string these together — 我们需要这个产品的第三方检测报告和CE认证证书 (wǒmen xūyào zhège chǎnpǐn de dìsānfāng jiǎncè bàogào hé CE rènzhèng zhèngshū — we need a third-party testing report and CE certification certificate for this product) — immediately positions you as a buyer who knows what they are doing, which affects everything from pricing to the seriousness with which your request is handled.
One of the most important certification-related questions in Chinese is also one of the simplest: 证书在有效期吗 (zhèngshū zài yǒuxiàoqī ma — is the certificate within its validity period?). Certifications expire. Testing standards update. A certificate that was valid when the supplier first exported to your country three years ago may be worthless today. Chinese suppliers do not always track expiration dates proactively — they may genuinely not realize a certificate has lapsed until a buyer asks. Asking about validity is not an accusation; it is a practical check that protects both parties. And if the supplier does not have the certificate you need, the next phrase is 能不能去做一个 (néng bù néng qù zuò yī gè — can you go get one?). Certification is a service that Chinese factories can purchase from testing labs, and many are willing to obtain new certifications for a serious buyer — though the cost and timeline become part of the negotiation.
