WHEN IT FITS

Sharing content to WeChat Moments, chats, or other appsSharing experiences, feelings, or informationThe share button on every platform

分享 is the share button on every Chinese platform, but it carries more warmth than the English “share.” 分 (divide/split) + 享 (enjoy) = to divide something good so others can enjoy it too. The word’s origin is generous: sharing food, sharing happiness, sharing good fortune.

In apps, the 分享 button is what you tap to send content to WeChat Moments, to a specific friend or group, or to another app entirely. The iOS/Android share sheet in China is dominated by WeChat, Weibo, QQ, and Douyin as destinations. 分享 is the universal verb across all of them.

The distinction from 转发:

  • 分享 — share. Broader, warmer. Can be your own original content or someone else’s. 分享生活 (share my life), 分享美食 (share good food).
  • 转发 — forward/repost. Specifically about passing along content that originated elsewhere. More transactional.

The cultural usage: 分享 is a positive social act. You share good things — useful articles, beautiful photos, happy news. The phrase 感谢分享 (thank you for sharing) is a standard polite response. Unlike some English contexts where “thanks for sharing” can be sarcastic, Chinese 感谢分享 is almost always genuine.
