What does 关注 mean?

The universal 'follow' across all Chinese platforms — arguably the most important social media verb.

关注

guān zhù

Follow (on social media) / pay attention to / care about.

LITERAL

Pay attention to / keep an eye on.

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS

Follow (on social media) / pay attention to / care about.

WHEN IT FITS

Following someone on social mediaPaying attention to a topic, issue, or eventCaring about someone or something

关注 is the verb that powers China’s follower economy. On every platform — Weibo, Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, Kuaishou — the follow button says 关注. Tap it, and you are now following that creator, receiving their content in your feed.

The word also carries its original meaning: to pay attention to, to care about. When someone says 我很关注这个问题 (I really care about this issue), it means genuine concern, not social media following. The dual meaning is intuitive to native speakers but requires context awareness from learners.

The follower vocabulary ecosystem:

  • 关注 — follow (the action)
  • 取关 — unfollow (the withdrawal)
  • 粉丝 (fěnsī) — fans / followers
  • 涨粉 (zhǎng fěn) — gain followers
  • 掉粉 (diào fěn) — lose followers
  • 求关注 (qiú guān zhù) — begging for follows
  • 互关 (hù guān) — mutual follow (I follow you, you follow me)

The numbers game: follower counts are displayed prominently on every profile. Weibo uses 万 (wàn, ten-thousand) as the unit once you pass 10,000 — someone with 150,000 followers has “15万粉丝.” Douyin and Kuaishou use similar conventions. A KOL (Key Opinion Leader, the Chinese equivalent of influencer) is partly defined by their 关注 count — how many people are watching.

The phrase 关注走一波 (drop a wave of follows) is the Chinese creator’s call to action — like “smash that follow button.” It is casual and platform-native.
